HIPAA update for 2013 and beyond
Many of you have written to us to ask questions about the changes to HIPAA regulations that went into effect March 26, 2013.
We have prepared a summary of the new rules, and we hope this information will help you understand how the changes to HIPAA impact your practice. As you read the summary, keep in mind the following four points:
- The current versions of Therapist2Go forms are compliant with these changes. If you bought your HIPAA forms in 2013, you already have the forms you need.
- Many of the changes that went into effect March 26 are business process changes. You should review these requirements to ensure that the way you do business complies, even if your forms are current and do not require updating at this time.
- If you have staff, contractors, or vendors who may come into contact with PHI in the course of their duties with your practice, the rules involving their involvement have changed. If you have people who help you run your practice, review these new rules carefully, as you will likely need to address these amendments with them.
- When in doubt, consult with an attorney for clarification on how to best comply with the new HIPAA regulations. Your attorney would be in the best position to offer advice regarding the specific needs of your practice. Remember: A couple hours worth of attorney’s fees upfront are much less expensive than the cost of defending your practice or your license later!
About Therapist 2 Go
Sometimes therapists can find themselves overwhelmed with the administrative aspect of their therapeutic practice. The sheer volume of information required for client intake forms, consent forms, and HIPAA requirements, to name a few, can be a daunting prospect, particularly for the sole practitioner or small practice.
In creating Therapist 2 Go, I have endeavored to develop and streamline an organization and information management system that is straightforward and easy to use. Our goal is to provide you with the tools you need to run an efficient, profitable business, allowing you to spend more time focused on the therapeutic process and less time on routine administrative tasks.
It is my hope that Therapist 2 Go will be the first step to your thriving therapeutic practice.
